The Tunnel of Love

During, November 2006, the Tunnel of Love was planted with climbing roses from pots for approximately 18 months.

It is hoped that after some rain over the next 18 months, the arch will be covered.

Approximately 800m3 of local clean fill was used for the two planting mounds.

2) The Lilly Pond

The Lilly Pond is supplied with rainwater which runs off the North side of the house and due to the drought is running empty.

The next course is to top up with our own recycled water which will be cleaned by Louisianan Irises in the pond.

Soon I will construct a river bed to pump the pond water over it which will also act as a biofilter.

3) The Olive Grove

The Olive Grove is a wonderful example of growing for the table.

The trees are fast growing and hardy and with the help of our ever increasing bee population, they are becoming excellent bearers of fruit.

We have approximately 15 varieties growing in the garden, some for oil production, and some for pickling.

The trees are available for purchase.

4) The Sensory Garden

The Sensory Garden has been designed to accommodate visitors with different needs such as sight, sound, mobility, and each of the plants selected has a special scent, texture, taste, color or even sound; so as to appeal to different senses.

We had a planting day involving a group of students from Werribee Primary School with varying levels of vision impairment; where we planted 30 Lavender and Rosemary plants.

The plan is to make a concrete path through the area when funds permit, to improve wheelchair access.

5) Our Orchard / Chooks

We have about 40 fruit and nut trees in our orchard, which during the off season we allow our ever dependable chooks to keep the area mowed and fertilized.

When the new season’s blossoms arrive in Spring, the chooks are removed until fruiting has ceased.

6) The Olive Tree Maze

The Olive Tree Maze was brought into the design just recently as a last minute thought.

There was a sale of Frantoio olive trees which in my opinion makes the nicest olive oil on the planet, and there was a 600+ square metre area which kept gathering weeds.

With the help of 200m3 of clean fill and about 80m3 of mulch which we produced from our arboricultural services (see Sureline Tree Services page for more details), we designed and built our olive tree maze in June 2006.

7) The Retreat

This proposed shelter is designed as a retreat to get away from it all and relax, smell the roses and enjoy the view.

Four inches of rain will fill these 2 recycled 1000 litre tanks.

8) Water Catchment Shelter

Every garden needs shelter from the harsh elements, but it also needs water; so why not build shelters that catch water?

Fill the tanks we have on display and give our plants a drink.

Every mm of rain on this shelter gives us 40 litres in this 4,500 litre tank.

9) Outdoor Earth Oven

You’ve never really tasted pizza until one has been cooked to perfection in your own backyard in an oven built by your own hands with the special ingredients of Earth, Rock & Wood (see ERW Creations page).

If you would like to attend a one day Earth Oven building workshop, email us at
info@therosegarden.com.au.
The day includes hands on experience, and tuition that will empower you to build your own Earth Oven.
Enjoy a wonderful lunch cooked in our own earth oven. We can also build an oven for you.

10) The Kitchen Garden

The Kitchen Garden changes regularly according to the seasons and according to taste.

Vegetables, herbs, roses, ornamentals all grow well together and provide both visual and culinary delight.

Our Kitchen Garden has changed shape and color every year.

11) Herbs

Herbs are a subject (pronounced with a silent “h”) which we can never stop learning about.
We have herbs in many different part of the garden and at present we have huge gardens under construction to grow and nurture hundreds of culinary, medicinal and companion planting herbs.

Buy the book “ How do I grown and use Herbs in my daily life ” by Isabell Shipard for $39.50 (plus postage and handling) (See our Plant Catalogue page). Contact us at
info@therosegarden.com.au.

This Australian written book is a must for anyone interested in growing and using herbs.

Australia has waited 20 years for her first home herbal, but here it is at last! Isabell has always been the source of plants and advice for many of us, her admirers. We can be proud of her encyclopaedic work (Acerola to Yucca) on plants, which includes a vast reference background, as well as practical advice. “Shipard on herbs” is destined to be one of those foundation books that will be in print for the next century. Buy one for yourself, and your grandchildren .”

-Bill Mollison, Founder, The Permaculture Institute

12) Vegetable Garden

The Vegetable Garden is a fantastic learning centre for all the family and it also changes with the seasons and years.

Crop rotation to confuse bugs and pests as well as seasonal changes, insists that we are constantly changing the vegetable garden’s overall appearance.

Growing your own vegetables is an incredibly rewarding experience.

Get together a group of 6-10 friends and we will run a course to suit your needs.

13) Olive Hedge

The Olive Tree Hedge is not the first of its kind but for us it is a new experience.

Unlike hedges such as Pittosporums, Lilly-Pillys, Photinia, etc. an Olive Tree Hedge has more than one use.
It will make a lovely silvery green screen as well as provide good quality home grown fruit for oil or pickling.

This was planted in May 2006. The irrigation is from our own recycled water.

14) Water Features

Water Features are a relaxing place in the garden.

We have been blessed with beautiful basalt rocks everywhere.

We excavate and some of the rocks insist on being used in a water garden.

With the water situation we are beginning to plan for recycled water in our features. Normally it is filled with rainwater.

We can build this on your property.

15) Dry-stone walls

I love to build structures in natural products and probably my most favorite is stone.

Not only have we used our own rock but have brought in hundreds of cubic metres of locally excavated rock from projects in town such as the Barwon Prison extension and by the use of hydraulic rock breakers, reduce their size to more easily handleable, yet exhausting sizes.
